It's also bitterly cold out there which is why I'm having a day at home sewing rather than going to the freezing cold unit :)

Having said this, it is lovely to see the sunshine, it's been a dark and dull year so far, which doesn't really help when you need a lift during these difficult times. So while we can't hug people in person to lift their spirits, why not send some love in the post instead - and what better way than with a lovely quilted heart?

This Mini Heart Quilt pattern is free to my Newsletter Subscribers and can be anything you want, a mini quilt for someone to hang on the wall, a large mug rug for a steaming hot cuppa and biccie, or maybe a block to add to a larger quilt. I won't go into the stresses and strains of 2020, but instead focus on being grateful. Thankfully, my family and friends, up until now (fingers crossed, touch wood and all that) have all stayed safe and well, even though this has meant not seeing them as much as usual. But as we know, this time will pass and these sacrifices will be worth it as there is finally an end in sight. It may take another few months and even more sacrifices to get there, but things will return back to normal and we can restart our lives again.

I know I can't wait to get back to exhibiting at quilt and sewing shows, I have really missed the in-person interaction I have with my customers, having a good old chat about quilting, as well as meeting up with my fellow business owners. Since March I have relied solely on online sales, and have been overwhelmed by the support and kindness from my customers who really have kept Sewmotion going this year. As well as placing orders, many of you took part in my block-of-the-fortnight quilt along, and shared some lovely pics of your progress. I have also received some very lovely and often timely emails with such kind thoughts and encouragement - thank you so much.

So to show my gratitude, I thought I would host an online gallery of Sewmotion makes to end the year on a high. I am also offering a prize bundle of Sewmotion goodies - the winning participant will be drawn out of a hat on Friday, 1st January by my glamorous assistant Justin :)

Having put a call out to my Newsletter subscribers and on Facebook, I have been inundated with photos of some truly gorgeous makes, I'm sure you'll agree. Many of us have kept busy working through the stash or finishing that pile of UFOs, and of course working through all those kits bought over the years. This series of free blocks was free to my Newsletter Subscribers in an effort to help them, and myself, through lockdown. Starting out as a mystery quilt, each fortnight I sent out the pattern for each of the nine main star blocks, followed by the choice of layout for the final project. It could be a wall hanging with some simple sashing and corner stones, as above, or you could go big and on-point with this beautiful finished quilt below. As you can see, the two projects are so different, and what's more, it's all hand sewn! Like me, so many people are discovering the amazing health benefits of some quiet meditative hand sewing, and this project has proved to be so helpful through these unprecedented times.

If you would like to join us in this hand sewing project, there is still time. A couple of projects are my new Diamond Star and Hexy EPP Cushion Kits which I demoed on John Scott's return show after lockdown. We were all happy to be back in the studio, but it felt very weird not being able to hug anyone - it is lovely to realise how much hugging is done in the sewing world though.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">As we are now in July, although it feels more like October here, I think we're now allowed to mention the C word, us makers have permission to start Christmas projects early don't you think!? I have a long list of projects and kits to get on with, including a new Christmas Wreath Table Mat kit, to be featured and demoed on my next appearance on John Scott's Sewing World on 14th July. Kit production is in full swing, which included cutting 600 2.5" fabric strips, ahhh!!
Still, I suppose it gives us an excuse to let Mother Nature do her thang in the garden and for us to get back indoors to our sewing. And if you're looking for a hand sewing project to immerse yourself in, why not join us on my block-of-the-fortnight Hope in the Stars Mystery Quilt.

For my latest free pattern to my Newsletter Subscribers, which is totally free to join, I have decided to host a block-of-the-fortnight mystery quilt. I know our world is on the verge of slowly getting back to some sort of normality, but I think it's going to take a long time, and is also going to be quite a stressful time for us all. And my best cure for stress? Hand sewing of course! Many of us will still be remaining at home as much as possible with time on our hands, so I'm releasing a block a fortnight to see us through the summer, hopefully sat in the sunny garden.

My Lockdown Sewdown quilt, otherwise known as Hope in the Stars, is made up of nine different blocks made using the traditional hand-piecing method - I know, not EPP!! What is wrong with me?!! I have recently fallen back in love with this technique and wanted to feature it in this glorious stars quilt. I have made two versions, one in Alison Glass's Sun Prints and the second in Edyta Sitar's Super Bloom, both fat quarter bundles are available on the website. <span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif; font-size: large;">I also have a set of pre-cut card templates to make life even easier, also available on the website.

Here is a pic of the first block, the Blazing Star, I love the 3D effect created by careful fabric placement. Once all blocks are made up, you will then have a few options of layout, all to be revealed at the end, so if you would like to join us in this hand sewing mystery adventure, why not sign up now?
I hope you are all keeping well and nicely occupied with a good sewing project or four :) We're doing ok, Justin is able to work from home so can have his favourite Radio 6 on in the background, and I'm still quite busy with internet orders, while planning a hundred new patterns and kits in my head! We've also been working in the garden. We only moved into this house back in September, so it's been a lovely surprise to see what's been coming up in the garden - this Montana clematis is stunning and these tulips are definitely still my favourite flower!
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Last week I dropped off my set of scrub bags to my local contact, she lives within walking distance so it was nice to have a walk out. Although it was only a meagre amount compared to some other amazing sewers, I was quite overwhelmed by the response by the lovely lady who told me how so many of the nurses and key workers were immensely grateful for the bags - as I explained last week, they use the bags to hold their dirty scrubs in to take home and wash, and are able to throw the whole lot in the washer without contaminating anything in their homes. I've even been approached on Instagram to make some for someone's mum and her friends who are all nurses.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">So I have raided my own stash this time and grabbed some old bolts off the shelf to make lots more, there does seem to be talk about them not being needed anymore, but this certainly isn't true, they are very much needed and greatly appreciated, as are actual scrubs, headbands with buttons, scrub caps and mask extenders. John Scott of John Scott's Sewing World has a great video on how to make the scrub bag, and also the cap and headband, which you can watch on his Facebook page here. However, I thought I would write a blog about how I have made a scrub bag following John's excellent pattern - mine are a little larger finishing at approx 18" x 20". I did start off cutting half metres of fabric and then washing them, only to find they shrunk in the 60degree wash, so the bags turned out too small! So now I cut approximate 70cm lengths and pre-wash at 60degrees before doing any sewing.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Give your fabric a good hot press and lay it out folded, selvedge to selvedge as it would be on the bolt of fabric, and trim to a 60cm length. Using your quilter's ruler to square up, cut along the fold and trim off the selvedges - which should be approx. <span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">20" x 24" each.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Use either an overlocker or your sewing machine to secure all four edges on each piece. I have a special foot and stitch on my machine, but you can also use a normal zig zag stitch.
The seam allowance doesn't have to be exact, just consistent, so I used the right side of my foot as a guide against the edge of the fabric. Lift the needle and start again at the second pencil mark, backstitching again to secure, then continue down the whole side. Repeat on the other side of our bag.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">If you would like to make scrub bags or any of the much needed PPE equipment for our amazing frontline workers, start by finding out if there is a local group who are collecting items to distribute to those who need them in your area. I found the awesome Making Scrubs for James Cook <span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">JCUH on Facebook so there may be similar groups on there. If you can't find any, you can send them straight to John Scott who is collecting them for Dulcie Scott's national <span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">charity Helping Dress Medics - John Scott's Sewing World, PO Box 6688, Stratford on Avon, CV37 1TZ.
I do hope you're all keeping well and finding some much needed calm and sanity in your sewing. When I've not been processing orders, I've been working on some new kits to help inspire my customers, many of who are going through their stash and UFOs very quickly indeed! I also have many new customers who are using this down time to finally get round to learning how to quilt, which is amazing!! My Beginner's Quilt Kits are ideal places to start. I now just have to get on with some new kits to help them develop theirs skills even further... hahah!
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Many customers are also finding solace in my EPP cushion kits, not only are they small do-able projects, but as I said in my last post, hand sewing really does help centre the mind and shut out the world for a little while, something we all need at the moment.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Once the EPP is complete on my Cushion and EPP kits, you then have to appliqué the panel onto background fabric, and I have often been asked how to deal with the 'dog ears' and how to get nice sharp points. I have now included this in my kit instructions, but I thought I would also share a little tutorial here.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Once you have centred and pinned or basted your panel onto your background fabric, you will use a tiny slip stitch to sew it down. Knot the end of the thread and bring your needle up from behind the background fabric. Pick up a couple of strands of fabric from the very edge of your pieced panel, then insert your needle directly downwards back into the background fabric. Travel a tiny way along behind the background fabric and bring the needle up again to pick up the edge of the pieced unit again, and as before go straight downwards into the background. The smaller the stitches the more invisible they will be.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">When you get to a point, you will have a flap of fabric in the way - these are called 'dog ears' and must be kept in tact - don't be tempted to snip them off, though if they are too large, you can trim them slightly. Fold the 'dog ear' to the left and out of the way and stitch up the folded point.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Add a couple of stitches to strengthen the point, then tuck the dog ear underneath the panel and continue to sew down the next side. As you can see below, this gives you a nice sharp point to your shape.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Talking of EPP cushions, I have just released a pair of new kits in Riley Blake's Heart & Soul prints - a Diamond Star and a Hexy, which would make a lovely matching pair on a sofa. <span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Each kit includes all the fabric for the front, pre-cut paper templates, embroidery thread and full instructions. Click here to find out more.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">I know many of us have been putting our sewing skills to good use and making much needed PPE supplies for our wonderful workers on the frontline of this terrible pandemic. From scrubs to masks, headbands to scrub bags, I have seen some wonderful fabrics being brought out of the stash for this amazing cause. I myself have been making scrub and shoe bags which will be going to my local hospital James Cook in Middlesbrough.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">I really want to crochet some mask extenders too, it's been so long since I crocheted! I have also just heard from a friend that she has the filter fabric needed for face masks available on her online shop Sewing Sanctuary, so maybe that's the next project...
From excitement for the year ahead with new shows and projects to look forward to, to a feeling of loss, fear and confusion that, to be honest, I'm struggling to get my head around. How can this have happened so damn fast!?

As a mainly online business, working from home or alone at my unit isn't really any different for me, but it breaks my heart to hear about other business owners fearing for their survival. Us sole trader entrepreneurs have taken that leap to follow our dreams and have worked so hard to make it work - to see it all come to an end through no fault of our own, is just killing me. Many of us don't have back up funds in the bank, let alone any profit as it is all ploughed back into the growth of the business.

Anyway, enough with the worry and stress I tell myself, there's nothing I can do about it other than keeping going as best as I can, support other businesses where I can, and to help my customers in the best possible way. I am very fortunate to be in an industry that can offer amazing help to people at this unsettling time, as we all know sewing and craft can bring great calm and relief in times of stress, and we have never needed it more.

It has been said that us quilters have been preparing for this our entire crafting lives and this is the perfect time to hit the stash, so if you are looking for inspiration, I have a number of free patterns on the website, including the All Squared Up quilt, and my Curved EPP Flower Cushion for those lovers of hand sewing. Click here to see the collection.

So far I have found hand sewing to be my saviour, together with an engrossing audible book really helps to switch off the world for a while and just concentrate on one thing. Which is why I have a new EPP Diamond Cushion kit out, this one features lovely soft blues and greys from Makower's Bloom collection. I've got some great shows coming up starting with the Spring Quilt Festival in Harrogate - Friday 21st - Sunday 23rd February, 10am - 4.30pm (4pm on Sunday)

This show is smaller than the Autumn one and creates a much more intimate atmosphere, visitors are able to walk around a lot easier, see the quilts on display at their leisure, have a lovely lunch and then start shopping in a non-rushed relaxed manner. Harrogate is also my nearest venue to home so it means I get to sleep in my own bed every night, though I'm just hoping the snow stays away...
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif; font-size: large;">You can learn more about this event by clicking here.

My second show this month is brand new to me. Formerly known as the Knitting & Stitching Show held at Olympia in London, it has now changed name and venue to The Stitch Festival, to be held at the Business Design Centre in Islington, north London, about 20mins from my mum, so it would have been silly not to really!

I'm very excited about this one as it's my first in London so it will be interesting to see how it does - I won't bore you with the kit and fabric prep for these shows, but I'll just say I'm needing nightly baths to ease my back and feet at the moment.

I also have a discount code for tickets - instead of paying £15 for an advance adult ticket and £13.50 for concession, you will pay just £12.50 - to book tickets visit the website or call 0844 854 1349 and quote code STITCH113 when prompted. (Unfortunately there is a £2.20 booking fee and £2.50 for postal, which you would have to pay anyway, but hopefully this discount will help).

In more exciting news, I am lucky enough to have been asked to be involved in John Scott's very first show on his new venture, John Scott's Sewing World!!!

For those who don't know who on earth I'm talking about, John Scott was one of the presenters on Sewing Quarter where I was a guest designer. He's also had quite a fascinating life himself having worked as a costumier on Hollywood films and a fashion expert on TV, and so many other amazing things over the years which he is sharing in his own regular blog. He is also mad about sewing, and happens to be one of the most genuine people I have ever met.

So, once Sewing Quarter closed, the wonderful people at Crafter's Companion snatched him up and he's now got his own show under their umbrella of Crafters TV. To begin with, it will be aired every Tuesday 8-12noon, with plans to expand over the year.

I was very chuffed indeed to be asked to be one of his first guests on his inaugural show on Tuesday 3rd March where I will be selling my own EPP cushion kit in two colourways - as I am launching them on the show, I can't show them yet, but here is a pic of the mammoth kit production underway to give you a clue, yep, that's a bit of Liberty and Alison Glass! :)
Happy New Year everyone, even if it's already the 9th January, I hope you had a wonderful break surrounded by love and happiness, be it with friends and family, or some quiet sewing time to yourself.

We had a lovely quiet Christmas with my mum, then went to our best friends in Germany for New Year which was so much fun. Now I'm back full of more ideas than ever and great plans for 2020.

2020 has already started with a bang thanks to the final airing of Sewing Quarter. As I may have mentioned, this great sewing TV Channel had to close at the end of 2019, which really was very sad for everyone involved. However, they had some airtime to fill at the beginning of January and gave us guest designers the chance to film solo shows to let viewers know how to keep in touch with us and learn more about our businesses. We weren't too sure when these shows were to be aired, but when I suddenly started getting Newsletter subscribers and orders online, I knew my show had to be on, what's more they were on a loop, so every few hours this would happen again, so funny! I really enjoyed doing my shows at SQ and I'm so glad so many viewers have decided to carry on following me and Sewmotion, so if you are one of them, thank you very much!

On my SQ show, I demoed my latest cushion kit, the Overlapping Circles and Flower cushion in Liberty Pinks. Having watched my YouTube tutorial on my EPP Curved Flower cushion, customers have been asking for one on the overlapping circles, so I'm really pleased I got the chance to record this one - if you have purchased this kit in the past and need a little extra help - maybe you learn better from following a demo rather than reading instructions - then you can view this recording on Sewing Quarter's YouTube channel

I have also been working on this month's Free Pattern to send out to my Newsletter subscribers, a little late again, but I really do plan to get on top of these this year and not leave them til the last minute, honest! This month I fancied some hand sewing, but instead of EPP, I have returned to the first patchwork technique I learnt, American hand piecing, which involves sewing a tiny running stitch along a drawn line. I had forgotten how much I love this method and plan to do more of it! This wall hanging (or table runner, it's up to you) was inspired by my love of Orla Kiely's graphics, and is a kinda homage to her Stem design. Subscribe to the Newsletter now to receive your own free copy straight to your inbox.
I made one for myself years ago which you may have seen on my video tutorials. This is also when I first discovered crushed walnut shells, not only does using this as stuffing give them added weight, but the shells are also a great abrasive so they keep your pins nice and sharp.

I have also put together three kits to make these star pincushions, each includes the fabric, pre-cut paper templates, two buttons and full instructions. You can find out more here.

So we're coming to the end of yet another year... I have no idea where this one has gone, yet a lot seems to have happened, my TV appearances on Sewing Quarter for one. <span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif; font-size: large;">As you may have seen on social media posts and the TV Channel, Sewing Quarter is sadly closing at the end of the year. It was been a wonderful opportunity to work on such an inspiring project with a team of amazing people, and I'm sure this will be the start of many creative ventures and collaborations to come, so watch this space - you can also follow my fellow guest designers' latest news on the new Facebook group SQ Designers Chat
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif; font-size: large;">

This year has also seen many new pattern and kit releases, my Curved Motion Medallion BOM is still going strong - you can join this at any time by the way - not to mention the house and business move - and through it all I am still loving what I do.

I still wake up with amazing<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif; font-size: large;"> plans for each day, and can't wait to get up and get on with making. I know I am very lucky, but I also know this takes damn hard work as well as the love and support from my loved ones and my wonderful customers. So thank you so much, thank you if you have bought something from Sewmotion this year, if you have subscribed to the Newsletter, if you have left a lovely comment on social media, or even if you have just read my (ir)regular blog posts, every one of these is so much appreciated and I know I couldn't be living my best life without you.
For me, this has been a difficult decision having had a successful weekend in the past. Well, I say successful, the orders have come in, but when I dare to look at my profit margins a week later and find out if it was worth it, I have found I have more or less given some products away for free!

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">I know these annual sale events are great for some items, TVs, furniture and the like, and for huge shops with even bigger profit margins, it works very well, though even that's questionable sometimes when you look at the mark downs.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">However, when it comes to small businesses, and especially craft businesses when the mark ups are very low indeed, this just doesn't make sense. I try my best to keep my products' prices as low as possible for my customers all year round in the hope of encouraging them to take up this amazing craft, or to feed their pre-existing sewing addiction. This makes it harder for me to offer such huge discounts.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">As you know if you subscribe to my Newsletter, I do offer introductory discounts on kits and other products nearly every week. I also hold a couple of sales through the year and often offer free postage weekends. I would much rather offer my customers discounts throughout the year, rather than trying to compete with large organisations' ridiculous discounts over this one weekend.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">So this year, instead of offering knock down prices my business is unable to sustain, I am going to celebrate Small Business Saturday on the weekend of December 7th - 8th. I feel this event does much more for us small businesses, encourages customers to think before they buy and to support small and local shops. We do live in uncertain times at the moment, and while the big firms are doing their 'thing', I believe it will be the small independent businesses that will shine through all this mess.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">While a growing amount of people are thinking more carefully about what to spend their money on, I encourage you to also think about where your money is going... to a huge multi-national who cares very little about their customer or the quality of their product? Or to a small company who carry their passion for their business all the way through to their customer service and final product. We care what about our customers think, what they feel and appreciate every penny spent with us!
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">So when you think about your gift shopping this year, please help support your local shops and those small online businesses who, while they can't compete with the big corporations of this world, can instead offer you a much more genuine, friendly and caring <span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">service <span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">while being thoughtful in what they offer to their customer.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">During this weekend, I would like to offer, a much more sustainable discount of <span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">£5.00 off when you spend £35 <span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">or more on the Sewmotion website. This offer will run <span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">over the weekend of Saturday 7th until midnight on Sunday 8th December. Simply use the code SmallBizSat at checkout.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">There will also be some extra offers available to my Newsletter subscribers over the weekend - so why not click below to sign up now and not miss out.
I can't believe it's nearly Christmas again! It's been all go at Sewmotion HQ lately where I have taken delivery of the beautiful new collection of quilting cottons from Liberty of London, Summer House. I have the Purple and the Pink colourways, and started off with a making up a couple of strip sets (aka jelly rolls), aren't they pretty! You can see my whole collection of quilting fabric pre-cuts here.

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif; font-size: large;">I then decided to make up a new Diamond Star Cushion using a couple of these fabrics, and I especially love how the fussy-cut centre star has come out. I do love this cushion design, and with enough fabric to make one of three different layouts, this kit really does make a lovely hand sewing project. You can find out more about my cushion kits here.

My latest project in these fabrics is my All Squared Up quilt kit - this design has always been a firm favourite, and was originally designed as the next step in skill level after my Beginner's Quilt kits. However, it has proved popular with both beginners and the more experienced quilter as it shows off the fabrics so well, and these Summer House prints are no exception!

I have hand-cut all the 2.5" strips in both the Liberty prints and the grey background, as well as the borders and binding, though you will still have some cutting to do to piece the blocks. The kit also comes with thread and full instructions. I have added my favourite pieced backing to this quilt - I do love a pieced backing, not only can you use the fabrics used on the front, but you also get two quilts in one! This backing set is also available on the website.

I am also busy preparing for my first Knitting & Stitching show which takes place at Harrogate's Convention Centre next week. The four-day event is huge and attracts all types of crafters as well as quilting, so it should be a really interesting show.

Before all of that busyness however, we are celebrating my lovely Justin's 50th birthday with a weekend in Newcastle, which promises amazing food, sampling his favourite IPAs and a visit to the amazing Biscuit Factory gallery.
It seems since moving into my new unit, I just haven't stopped, not that I'm complaining of course, it's all great, but rather stressful!
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">My next show is next week's Autumn Quilt Festival in Duxford, one of the more interesting venues of the year as it's held in one of the hangars at the Imperial War Museum at Duxford Airfield. So once visitors have had their fix of fabric retail therapy and inspiring quilts, they can have a wander around the huge aircraft on show, read about aviation history and may even see a Spitfire taking off, it really is a great day out! The Duxford Quilt Show runs from Friday 25th to Sunday 27th October - you can out more details here.
There are obviously things we'd like to do to the house, but nothing's urgent, although the boiler does make some very loud bangs now and again! We've also had fun with some very cute mice who decided to bed down in a house plant my in-laws were looking after during the move, they got the shock of their lives when they were moved into our kitchen and given a good water - the mice that is, not the in-laws... Thankfully we've moved them into the warmth and safety of the garage now.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">After a mad month, I am now back on track with my free Newsletter patterns - if you are new to Sewmotion, I send out a free pattern every month to my subscribers, generally based on the use of fabric pre-cuts, but to be honest, it is anything that inspires me at the time! You can find out more and sign up here.
What's more I have also moved Sewmotion into a nearby unit - though it's only 4mins walk away, so not too far :)
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">We have moved to the beautiful seaside town of Marske-by-the-Sea on the Northeast coast. We have lived near the sea before in nearby Redcar, but 10 years on I think we're now more likely to appreciate being so close to the beach for long evening walks and strolls to nearby Saltburn. This was the first move (and we've done a few) when we have used a removal firm, and my word, what a difference that made!
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Mind you, we still moved all my fabric and 'stuff' the week before into my new workshop - so exciting. As you can see, I've just about got all the fabric off the floor and onto shelves, I just need some more shelving for the kits and stash, hopefully a trip to Ikea this weekend should sort that out, and then I can get back to doing some sewing...
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Last Sunday I was also on Sewing Quarter again - I had to be ultra organised to get these quilts prepped before moving! This was also the first time I have worked with presenter Natasha, who was very lovely indeed. In my first show I made the Stonehenge quilt using gorgeous Anna Maria Horner fabrics - this quilt was a joy to make, once you have labelled all the cut pieces, the blocks come together really quickly, and even better, there were very few seams to match up. In my second show, I demoed Lynne Goldsworthy's Patriotic Log Cabin quilt, as featured in the current issue of Today's Quilter. This was another quilt that came together really quickly thanks to good sized pieces and liberal labelling. If you missed these shows, or would like to see them again, you can catch them on Sewing Quarter's YouTube channel here - the Stonehenge quilt is in the second hour, and the log cabin in the fourth.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Right, I'm off to unpack some more boxes... wishing you all a lovely and creative week, linking up with Midweek Makers and Needle & Thread Thursday.Sewmotionhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15312915575213316891noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2617815239901728816.post-7106107496394882992019-08-22T11:02:00.000+01:002019-08-22T11:02:05.562+01:00Playing on my Sewing Machine<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Well, a week back and our holiday in glorious Kefalonia already seems like months ago! We had a very relaxing time, if a little too hot at times, still the town of Skala was as beautiful as ever, and one day we may even retire there...
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Meanwhile, back to reality - the next few months look crazy! With Harrogate Quilt show next week, then hopefully a house move, Duxford Autumn Quilt show at the end of October, my first Knitting & Stitching show in Harrogate in November, not to mention a few Sewing Quarter shows slotted in, I think I'll be sleeping through Christmas :)
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">It is good to be back in the swing of things though, I definitely needed a break after Festival of Quilts, and now I'm full of ideas again, the first of which is my monthly <span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">free<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: large;"> pattern to my Newsletter subscribers, I know it's a little late, but better late than never right? For this month, I have gone back to an old favourite that I used to make as finished gifts back when I used to sell at craft fairs - the Patchwork Glasses Case.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">This is a great little project with some simple machine sewing, but the best thing is I get to play with some of the bazillion stitches on my sewing machine that I just never get the time to explore. As you can see, I needed to add an embroidered accent down both sides of the case, so I had a little play to find the appropriate stitch, noting down the stitch number and size as I went, so when I came to make a decision I knew what to program into the machine. I also found that unplugging my foot and using the start/stop button when sewing the embroidery stitches made it so much happier tension-wise.
One minute we were heading down the motorway hoping my pallet had been delivered to the right stand and that I'd made enough stock, and then before we knew it, it was Sunday and we were pulling our weary bodies together ready for packdown!

Having worked quite a few Festivals, this was only my second with Sewmotion, and I have to say, it was my favourite so far. There seemed to be such a friendly smiley atmosphere in the room, with so many people coming up to the stand just to say hello. Much of this was down to my appearances on Sewing Quarter of course, but also the many friends and customers I have made over the last year.
Thank you so much from the bottom of my heart.

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif; font-size: large;">I was also quite pleased with how my stand came together - after so many shows, I think I may have cracked it :) I love the cute stand I bought from <a href="https://www.etsy.com/uk/shop/DaisymoonDesignsLtd" style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">Daisy Moon Designs<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif; font-size: large;"> on Etsy to display my pre-cut EPP papers, which were a firm favourite.

We were also often joined by Sewing Quarter's John Scott, who I have to say, provided a true masterclass in genuine hospitality. He seemed to be constantly smiling throughout the whole four days, presenting live shows when he wasn't giving out free hugs and selfies, I don't know how he did it! You can also see my Justin photo-bombing above, I couldn't do any of this without his love and support, he's also now a master at packing walnut shells and knows his fat quarters from his jelly rolls!

Having said that it was my favourite Festival so far, I am also very annoyed with myself! Yet again, another year has gone and going from others visitors' posts on IG and FB, I seemed to have missed half the quilts on show, including the Modern category. It goes to show how much brain work and emotion go into running a stand at these events, that I forgot to make time to see the quilts and actually do any shopping! Some did catch my eye on the way in and out which you can see below, I particularly liked the Mind the Gap London underground map which reminded me of my hometown.
So far this year, we have been enjoying my block-of-the-month Mystery quilt which came to an end in June. So we are now returning to my beloved pre-cuts and stash-busting patterns, starting with a variation on a theme...
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">My Wonky Squares Wall Hanging pattern proved very popular, especially when I made it on Sewing Quarter, so I started to wonder which other shapes would work - and of course, I had to have a go with the good ol' hexy! I also returned to my partially-seamed hexies, a tutorial for which can be seen here. Add in the freezer paper technique used for the wonky blocks, and hey presto, I have a new pattern.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Now, I have to admit, I think there is a little too much white/negative space in the wall hanging for me - you may love the space to create beautiful free motion quilting designs, or maybe embroidered motifs. If it's not for you, then you can simply decrease the size of the sashings and borders as below, just taking an 1" off the width of the strips makes such a difference.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">As the wonky blocks finish at a 9" square, there are so many possible layouts - I have had a play with a few below...
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">In this one I have bordered the 9" blocks with blue strips <span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">to add a little more interest<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">, then added white sashings and borders.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Who says the wall hanging has to be square, or this would make a gorgeous table runner. Add light blue sashings and inner border and then a wider white border.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Finally, my favourite, which I think I will just have to make into a quilt when I get a minute! I have added the layout below so you can see the white strips that offset the blocks to create this circle.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">You can obviously also play around with the colours - what about using all black and whites for a monotone quilt? Maybe different tones of the same colour?

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif; font-size: large;">Well, last month saw the grand reveal, and then I thought I would add a bonus email with instructions for a pieced backing, and then ideas for quilting.
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif; font-size: large;">I then one step further and made up a quick video on how quilted my own version in a concentric circles design using my walking foot on my home machine.
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif; font-size: large;">

Even though this design does take a while, especially on a domestic sewing machine, it is still possible (though I strongly recommend an extension table and quilting gloves) and the time and patience is well worth the effort! I love the texture this design creates and I think it accentuates the idea of the birds flying out of the centre nest. I'm hoping to put this quilt together as a kit soon, so watch this space!

Elsewhere at Sewmotion, I'm in the middle of Festival of Quilt prep madness, surrounded by kits, papers and patterns that all need sorting into boxes! I also came across some tickets for this year's show, so I'm holding a little competition on my Instagram page for a chance to win not only two show tickets, but also one of my new Hoop Art kits - visit my page for more details here.
As you can see below, Jo made her quilt in rich red and yellow scraps from her stash.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">I was asked to make the quilt in pretty floral prints from Moda, so I sorted out the colours according to the brief, the yellows and greens were like for like in the quilt which was fine, however,<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: large;"> the pinks and blues were to replace the reds in the original quilt, which is where my quilt went in a different direction.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Once I had cut all the fabric pieces, I got stuck into a few hours of foundation paper-piecing, surrounded by the usual mess, am I alone in this? With all the trimming and different pieces, I soon find myself getting very untidy! Anyway, as Jo suggested, I made a few blocks at a time - the whole quilt is actually made of just one block, four of which make the star. As I made each block I laid them out on the floor beside me, and soon realised this was going to be even more scrappy that Jo's.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Even though I tried to go for some pattern and had the red stars in the centre and four corners, with the blue stars filling the rest, I still think something was lost in having so many very similar prints close to each other, in some cases the star is lost completely. I realised that this came down to fabric values...
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Fabric values, along with hues and saturation, are all interlinked in colour theory, and come in very handy with planning a quilt design. Hue is what people mean when they say 'colour' - red is a different hue than blue. Value refers to the lightness or darkness of the hue, so you could have reds of the same hue, but one is of a lighter value than the other. Whereas saturation is the intensity of the colour and is related to the hue and value. Fully saturated colours appear brighter and clearer, while less saturated colours are milky or greyer. A fully saturated yellow has a much lighter value than a fully saturated red.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">So if we apply this theory to my quilt, you can see that there is one red hue that stands out more than any other as it is the most saturated, while the other reds used to make up the star design are less saturated and very similar in value to the neighbouring yellows, making the overall star design less distinct.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">When preparing for the Sewing Quarter show, I decided to make up another block using identical red and yellow prints for the four blocks to make up a full star to show how being less scrappy would give you a whole different look. As you can see above, I used the same strong red and yellow prints for the star shape, but still went scrappy for the smaller pieces. While I prefer this layout, I also still love the scrappy version I made for the show, and of course, just had to quilt it in wavy lines!
