New Quantum Bygg Cushion Kits

When I first saw this Quantum Bygg collection from Andover fabrics, I just knew I had to have it! Designed by Giuseppe Ribaudo, otherwise know as Giucy Giuce on social media, this collection of geometric and abstract prints come in a more subtle or even sombre array of rainbow colours - the perfect opposite of those girly flowery prints that have featured in many of my quilt and cushion kits up to now.

Having already made up a 40pc strip set and 42pc Charm pack, both of which can be purchased in the Sewmotion Shop, I decided to make another set of matching cushions (the previous matching set in Pink Bloom proved very popular).

This time I wanted to revamp my Hexy Cushion kit, and used eight colours from Quantum and backed them onto a larger square of Linen Texture in Storm. I also used this in the matching Diamond Star cushion kit - I think this warm grey makes the colours shine! Both of these EPP designs are based on the traditional shapes of the hexagon and diamond, so no curved edges in sight! 

Each kit includes all the fabric, pre-cut papers and easy-to-follow instructions to make up each cushion front - you will need a Sewline glue pen, thread, wadding and backing. You can find out more and make a purchase here.

Christmas EPP Bunting and a Christmas Market

It's December!!! Which means we're finally allowed to talk Christmas! I know I started a while ago with my Table Runner and Wall Hanging Kits, so I just had to end this year's Pre-Cut Party with some festive bunting! As you may know already, or for those new to Sewmotion, I send out a free pattern every month to my Newsletter subscribers, before it goes on general sale, sometimes as a pattern only, but often as a kit. 

For this month's pattern I've returned to some EPP to create these adorable stars to make into Christmas bunting to adorn your wall. Or you could add a little loop to each one and make them into Christmas tree decorations, maybe don't go festive at all and make them in baby fabrics to hang in a nursery, the choice is entirely yours! It's a very busy time of year for us small businesses, and a highlight of this month is a lovely Christmas Market - I will be at this year's Bowes Museum Christmas Market at Barnard Castle in County Durham.

This ever-popular event takes place in the Museum's grounds, with entrance to the Museum and traditional fairground rides included in the £5.00 entry (£2.00 children).

Finding the positives in life

Is it me or does there seem to be a positive vibe in the air? Maybe it's the great weather or England's young footballers in Russia... But with the world going through so many upheavals and constant change, I find it difficult to hear the good things in life, one of the many reasons I no longer read our national press! But I went on Facebook the other morning to find so many happy stories to brighten my week. A friend who had had a pretty serious fall and broken her neck was well on the mend and able to look behind her for the first time since the accident. Another friend had completed her first triathlon at the young age of 69 while another had just completed a charity cycle ride from London to Cologne. These people are all amazing!

These achievements also reminded me of a wonderful lady I meet sometimes at my local quilt group. She's a friend of a friend really, and comes whenever we have a fabric sale. After introducing me to Mable, my friend then said, "guess how old she is... 90!!" I couldn't believe it, she looked amazing, if that's what quilting does for your longevity, then I'm all in! That was 3 years ago, and Mable's still going strong, in fact she told me that she's just tried English paper-piecing for the first time! Now this really made my day and just goes to show, it's never too late to try something new, be it running, swimming, cycling or EPP :)

Talking of EPP, my latest addition to my EPP Cushion Kit collection is now available in the Sewmotion Shop. This Diamond Star Cushion kit is a great hand sewing project using English paper-pieced diamonds to create this striking star design in Makower's Bloom fabrics. A lovely customer contacted me a while ago to ask if I could make up one of my quilt kits, but in different fabrics, and I said, of course I can! So we went for the Novelty Nine Patch cot quilt in Happy Day fabrics, and I have to say, Gillian's quilt is so pretty, and the backing is perfect - I love how she used the block left over from the front for a label.

Pre-Cut Paper Excitement and a New Cushion Kit

I have recently acquired a new toy, and I'm so excited!! A friend and fellow EPP addict was telling me about how her wonderful husband and boys had treated her to a Brother Scan N Cut machine for her birthday. Ooo, I asked, what does that do? Well, she said, as well as appliqué shapes and card making designs, she was also hoping she could scan and cut out all the templates for my Curve Motion Medallion BOM she's currently enjoying. WOW I said, really?! This I needed to know more about. So once home I started googling this amazing machine, and low and behold, Create & Craft were running a special on the latest version. I took this as a sign!

So this is my new baby, and so far, it's been amazing! Having watched numerous YouTube tutorials, I've got my head around the Canvas online app where you can download and manipulate your own designs, before sending them to the Scan N Cut via wifi, then it will draw certain lines before cutting out others. This means I can draw the necessary guidelines on each shape first, before they are all cut with the press of a button!! How great is that!

I've also found a slight heavier paper to use, a 120gsm, which should help get sharper points when glue basting. So, from now on, all my EPP kits will have pre-cut papers included, no more fiddly cutting out before you can get down to some sewing. Looks like I have even more work to do before Festival of Quilts now! haha!

In other news... I have now uploaded this new Overlapping Circles Cushion into the Sewmotion shop - this version is made in Edyta Sitar's lovely Blue Sky fabrics, and looks so soft and pretty against the light grey Essex Linen. You can learn more about this and all my cushion kits here.

Part 2 of my Curved EPP Tutorial - the Piecing - & an Easter Sale

Well, it's the Thursday before the Easter weekend and the sun is shining... fingers crossed it will continue to do so, I really fancy getting out into the countryside this weekend. That said, this is England, and no doubt the rain will appear at some point, which means another weekend of staying indoors with some sewing on the go... shame... ;)

I am working on so many EPP projects at the moment, including a long list of magazine commissions which I can't show off quite yet. However, I can share the second instalment of my series of YouTube videos on curved English paper-piecing and how to make this beautiful cushion.

My Curved EPP Movie Tutorials

I've been planning to make some how-to videos for a while now, but just haven't had the time to sit and learn something new. But with my obsession with curved EPP threatening to take over my life, I thought it was about time I showed the world what all the fuss was about, so I sat down and learnt how to use iMovie and made my first series of short tutorials. And what better place to start than with this gorgeous fussy-cut EPP Flower Cushion.

There will be four tutorials in all, the first one below starts with fussy-cutting each of these simple shapes, and then glue-basting them using a Sewline glue pen. I know there are traditionalists out there who prefer to thread baste, but you really can't get nice smooth curves around your shapes without using glue, and believe me, once you have pieced your shapes and removed the papers, you would never know glue was ever there!

The Curve Motion Medallion BOM technique in action

The first month's instalment of my Curve Motion Medallion block-of-the-month quilt went out this week, with fabrics, temps and instructions to make the two centre rings. This is a great English paper-pieced project for those looking for some slow meditative sewing, and you can start anytime!

Over the next 16 months from when you sign up, you will receive all of the Alison Glass and grey background fabrics you need to complete the top, including binding, plus full sized templates to cut out and easy-to-follow-instructions. 

This gorgeous quilt finishes at 82" square and features a curved EPP technique using glue basting, the same technique I used in my Sun Spell mini quilt featured on yesterday's Sewing Quarter TV channel.

Introducing the Curve Motion Medallion Quilt - a 2018 block-of-the-month

I have finally named my English paper-pieced block-of-the-month quilt - the Curve Motion Medallion Quilt - I really wanted to use the word 'curve' as this is what it's all about really, and then I thought of 'motion' as in Sewmotion. And even though it's not really obvious, this quilt is constructed in a medallion style, and even better, it's quilt-as-you-go, so all the individual rings are appliquéd onto grey squares, then quilted, before they're sewn together into a finished quilt approx. 90" square.

So if you're coming to the end of a 2017 BOM and in need of a new challenge, or maybe you're a lover of hand-piecing and looking to enjoy a slow sewing project, why not join us on this curved EPP adventure?

Each month you will receive instructions, full size templates to cut out, the relevant Alison Glass Sun Prints fabrics and a grey background square from Makower to make up to four blocks at a time.

So many new projects!

Both Christmas and my next quilt show at Duxford seem to have crept up on me, which means I'm having a mad week trying to get stock made up and getting kits together for Christmas gift shoppers. After having such a great success with my Pincushion Kits, I decided I should make a new EPP cushion kit using one of my new blocks from my Block of the Month design, the overlapping circles. Now I've worked out how to make this ring lay flat, I'm loving the design and couldn't resist making a rainbow version with Alison Glass's Diving Board prints, and what else to back it onto but Robert Kaufman's Essex Linen...

I've also been trying to get ahead for next month's free Pre-Cut party pattern, and finally made a quilt from my gorgeous 1930s feedsack prints. This one uses my layer cake roll of twenty-one 10" squares. My third project this week is a new version of my Quick & Easy/Beginner's Quilt Kit, using Makower's gorgeous Into The Woods fabrics - these blues are so beautiful! Hopefully the sun will be shining tomorrow for some 'finished' pics for the kit, then this too will be available. These simple quilt kits make great gifts for someone wanting to learn to quilt as the square are all pre-cut, they can just get stuck in and start sewing! I will be at the Autumn Quilt Festival in Duxford next week, this show is held at the Imperial War Museum at Duxford Airfield in amongst the full size aircraft hanging from the rafters - one of the most interesting quilt venues of the year! The show runs from Friday 27th to Sunday 29th October, 10am - 4.30pm (4pm on Sunday).

A new Rainbow EPP Pincushion kit

After releasing last week's free pattern to my Newsletter subscribers for these gorgeous EPP pincushions, I seem to have gone to town creating more kits! And when I received the new Alison Glass Diving Board fabrics, which just have rainbow written all over them, I couldn't resist making a third one. Don't they look stunning against that Kaufman Essex linen!

Each of the kits include all the fabric you need to make the pincushion, plus full instructions and actual size templates to cut out. All you need is a Sewline glue pen for basting and filling. They do make a perfect small project for retreats, as well as a great introduction to curved English paper-piecing. Why not treat a crafty friend this Christmas! Meanwhile, I'm also making further progress on my EPP BOM, to be released early next year, I'm now working on the larger rounds including this 'overlapping' design which was a sod to work out how to match up, but I've finally cracked it!

Bolt End Sale, EPP BOM Progress and Workshop Ideas

When designing and making up my quilt and cushion kits I buy small amounts of fabric, which makes these creations limited editions. If you see a kit at a show or online, it's unlikely that it'll still be available in six months time. And I like this, it means not only do I have to move onto to a new design and new fabrics, but I also get to sew and quilt a new product, what's bad about that (apart from time!) However, it also means that if I run out of just one fabric in the range and I don't want to re-order, I am left with the remaining fabrics I can no longer use. Meanwhile, I've been making great progress on my English paper-pieced block-of-the-month design, hoping to be released early next year. I've been having some great feedback from fellow quilters, and I can't wait to start sewing the blocks together using the quilt-as-you-go method. 

This BOM will feature Alison Glass's Sun Prints fabrics with that gorgeous Linen-look grey from Makower for the background squares. Each month you will receive the fabric and paper templates you need for the EPP, together with the grey background square to appliqué the shape onto, and of course full instructions for each block, including the quilting. This week I also had an exciting meeting with a like-minded sewist who has been dreaming of setting up some kind of sewing hub in the centre of Middlesbrough where we live. While she's more into dressmaking, and I quilting, we thought it would be great to join forces to offer workshops and classes, and to also provide a large workspace with sewing machines and tables for groups and individuals to use. This is obviously all in the planning stages, and we have lots of ideas, I would just appreciate some feedback from you... do you go to somewhere similar near you? What do you like about it? If you live in the Teesside area, would you come along? Any thoughts below would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

More exciting news - I was chuffed to be asked by Popular Patchwork to write their Patchwork Of My Life column in October's issue which is out now.

EPP BOM Progress & Social Sewing at Stitchscape

As many of us quilters, sewists and crafters know, 'making' is extremely good for our health and wellbeing. As life becomes faster and more pressured, finding those quiet moments seem more precious than ever, even just an hour or so to sit quietly, clear the mind from outside troubles and concentrate on just one thing at hand, and what could be more perfect than patchwork and quilting?! I've mentioned in the past how I use English paper-piecing as my free therapy, and after a very busy month, I'm looking forward to getting on with my EPP Block of the Month project, planned for release in early 2018. I've actually been thinking of a name, possibly centred on the curvy nature of the piecing... Curvaceous maybe? Circular Motion... ooo, like Sewmotion... mmm, what do you think? Maybe I should ask again when you can see more of the quilt! 

I'm just starting to quilt some of the individual blocks now, the whole quilt is designed (hopefully) to be constructed using the quilt-as-you-go method so you should be able to do most of it by hand making it a great portable project. I know I'm not alone in my craft-as-therapy thoughts, and one such lovely lady has used this idea to build a whole sewing community in Cheshire in the north-west of England. Diane's business, Stitchscape, is an amazing studio providing an 'escape place for stitchers'. This light and airy space is open 10-4pm every day except Wednesday and Sunday and is open to anyone wanting to either learn a new craft (you can see Diane's workshop schedule here) or those fed up with clearing their craft away every night, or having to sew alone. This social space provides an excellent opportunity to meet like-minded people who love to make, find help and inspiration from each other and to just sit, stitch and have a good chat! Recently Diane had an open day and purchased some of my kits to sell from her studio and she's just started a series of YouTube videos, each highlighting one of my kits - I'm overjoyed as you can imagine! New EPP Cushion Kits and a Love P&Q block

Are you a lover of hand sewing? Are you as addicted to English paper-piecing as I am? Everywhere you read these days, we're been told to take time out and do something mindful and relaxing, forget the busy mad world around us, just for a little while, and concentrate the mind on something meditative.

Well, my answer to this is to always have a hand-piecing project on the go, wherever I go - you may have seen me stitching away at a recent quilt show. And as you know, I like to share my addictions, which is why I'm releasing two new Cushion Kits, just in time for the summer hols!

This Hexy Cushion kit comes in subtle shades of grey, pink and green from P&B Textiles' Bear Essentials collection. As a huge fan of the humble hexagon, I love playing around with different layouts, and these rows are a firm favourite. Fast glue basting and a clever piecing technique makes this a quick project to come together. If you would rather use your own fabrics, I have also released this as a pattern, though you will still need the pre-cut 1" paper pieces, which you can get here. You can also download this pattern as a PDF in my Etsy shop.

My second new kit is one of my Diamond Cushions, made with Alison Glass' Sun Prints fabrics in gorgeous modern monochromes. This cushion design features a full star layout, and I have used a pink 12wt Aurifil thread to hand quilt each diamond. Both of these kits come with all the fabric you need to complete the cushion panel, including binding, plus a Sewline glue pen, paper templates, wadding and thread, and of course full colour instructions, perfect for that portable holiday project.

Elsewhere, today is my day on Instagram to share my block for Love Patchwork & Quilting's sew along featuring the booklet of 32 fabulous blocks free with the current issue. I chose to make this cross design using Michael Miller's Sweet Everlasting fabrics - wouldn't this make a gorgeous quilt, maybe with alternating fabrics?? If only I had the time... Talking of time... where does it go?? I'm making steady progress on my EPP Block of the Month design for next year... might be a tall order to get it done for Harrogate though. This month's free subscriber pattern

For July's free pattern for my Newsletter subscribers, I decided to go for a little foundation piecing... I know this technique is daunting to some, it took me a while to get my head around it, but with some nifty tools and tricks the technique I use with the simple Economy Block is a good introduction, and great to use with fat quarters. 

This lap quilt finishes at approx. 42" x 48" and features these gorgeous Confetti fabrics from Dashwood Studios - there's even a fussy-cut block in the centres! Unfortunately due to really crap dull 'summer' weather I haven't been able to take any decent shots of the whole quilt... hopefully tomorrow!

Basting a quilt on your bed

There seems to be a few videos floating around cyberspace at the moment showing different ways of layering and basting a quilt, one of which is this great method using long boards and a large table.

However, if you don't have a large enough table, and I don't, I thought I'd share the method I have used for years, well, forever actually, and its never let me down yet! I use my bed... admittedly I have a king size bed now, but even if your bed isn't big enough to hold your whole quilt at once, you can baste it in sections, click below for my full tutorial.

Works in Progress

Lately, I've been trying to take stock of my work and actually admit to myself how many projects I have on the go at this moment in time. I then sigh, put them back where I found them and carry on with a current favourite. This is not good! I know for many of my fellow quilt bloggers, documenting their UFOs (unfinished objects for the uninitiated) and owning up to them encourages them to get working and get stuff finished, so I thought I'd give this a try. Here goes…

I bought this gorgeous EPP pattern called Perpetual Spring, from Flossie Teacakes as a summer project. Even though it's my go-to project beside the sofa, I am making very slow progress – though having just got into Scandi-noir series The Bridge I’ve realised it’s impossible to sew and read subtitles at the same time! It may also have something to do with the colour... I'm really not a pink person! So I'm planning on adding some orange and yellow flowers into the 'bouquet', and as friends on Instagram have suggested, maybe even some lime green!

This next one is an idea that’s been rolling round my head for a while and I’ve finally got it cut and sewn. Unfortunately I can’t show the whole thing here, as I’m over the moon to say this cushion will be featured in Love Patchwork & Quilting magazine next year! Yay!! Though I will be developing this curved hexy idea into larger blocks and playing with the layout soon.

Another EPP project – do you see a running theme of unfinished projects here – is one which some of you may have seen at the Harrogate Quilt Show. Not one for standing still, this was my ‘portable project’ for that weekend. Now the piecing is complete, I really need to get this sewn onto a backing and get it quilted!

Then of course there’s the projects that haven’t seen the light of day in a while… a second version of my Side to Side pattern using Kona Solids, a new pattern based on HSTs, my Triple Goosed cushion using this fab foundation-pieced pattern from Jeli Quilts, and my recent adventure into curved piecing... I’m not going to even mention my La Passacaglia! 

Ah well, at the end of the day, I think I would much rather have too much to do than have nothing at all, I know these projects will get finished one day, just maybe not yet :)
