As I type we have a bright sunshine glistening on the snow that fell yesterday. It's also bitterly cold out there which is why I'm having a day at home sewing rather than going to the freezing cold unit :) 

Having said this, it is lovely to see the sunshine, it's been a dark and dull year so far, which doesn't really help when you need a lift during these difficult times. Progress on the Hope in the Stars Mystery Quilt

After such a warm and sunny spring, this sudden change in the weather has been a bit of a shock to the system to say the least! Still, I suppose it gives us an excuse to let Mother Nature do her thang in the garden and for us to get back indoors to our sewing. Each pattern is released every fortnight and includes instructions and templates for that block. The Hope in the Stars Mystery Quilt

For my latest free pattern to my Newsletter Subscribers, which is totally free to join, I have decided to host a block-of-the-fortnight mystery quilt. I know our world is on the verge of slowly getting back to some sort of normality, but I think it's going to take a long time, and is also going to be quite a stressful time for us all. And my best cure for stress? Hand sewing of course! Many of us will still be remaining at home as much as possible with time on our hands, so I'm releasing a block a fortnight to see us through the summer, hopefully sat in the sunny garden.

My Lockdown Sewdown quilt, otherwise known as Hope in the Stars, is made up of nine different blocks made using the traditional hand-piecing method - I know, not EPP!! What is wrong with me?!! I have recently fallen back in love with this technique and wanted to feature it in this glorious stars quilt. I have made two versions, one in Alison Glass's Sun Prints and the second in Edyta Sitar's Super Bloom, both fat quarter bundles are available on the website. I also have a set of pre-cut card templates to make life even easier, also available on the website.

Here is a pic of the first block, the Blazing Star, I love the 3D effect created by careful fabric placement. Finding Calm

Wow, how the world has changed since my last blog post! From excitement for the year ahead with new shows and projects to look forward to, to a feeling of loss, fear and confusion that, to be honest, I'm struggling to get my head around. How can this have happened so damn fast!? 

As a mainly online business, working from home or alone at my unit isn't really any different for me, but it breaks my heart to hear about other business owners fearing for their survival. Us sole trader entrepreneurs have taken that leap to follow our dreams and have worked so hard to make it work - to see it all come to an end through no fault of our own, is just killing me. Many of us don't have back up funds in the bank, let alone any profit as it is all ploughed back into the growth of the business.

Anyway, enough with the worry and stress I tell myself, there's nothing I can do about it other than keeping going as best as I can, support other businesses where I can, and to help my customers in the best possible way. I am very fortunate to be in an industry that can offer amazing help to people at this unsettling time, as we all know sewing and craft can bring great calm and relief in times of stress, and we have never needed it more.

New Year, New Month, Free Pattern!

Ok, this year is already going too fast for my liking!! Happy New Year everyone, even if it's already the 9th January, I hope you had a wonderful break surrounded by love and happiness, be it with friends and family, or some quiet sewing time to yourself.

We had a lovely quiet Christmas with my mum, then went to our best friends in Germany for New Year which was so much fun. Now I'm back full of more ideas than ever and great plans for 2020.

2020 has already started with a bang thanks to the final airing of Sewing Quarter. As I may have mentioned, this great sewing TV Channel had to close at the end of 2019, which really was very sad for everyone involved. However, they had some airtime to fill at the beginning of January and gave us guest designers the chance to film solo shows to let viewers know how to keep in touch with us and learn more about our businesses. We weren't too sure when these shows were to be aired, but when I suddenly started getting Newsletter subscribers and orders online, I knew my show had to be on, what's more they were on a loop, so every few hours this would happen again, so funny! I really enjoyed doing my shows at SQ and I'm so glad so many viewers have decided to carry on following me and Sewmotion, so if you are one of them, thank you very much!

On my SQ show, I demoed my latest cushion kit, the Overlapping Circles and Flower cushion in Liberty Pinks. Having watched my YouTube tutorial on my EPP Curved Flower cushion, customers have been asking for one on the overlapping circles, so I'm really pleased I got the chance to record this one - if you have purchased this kit in the past and need a little extra help - maybe you learn better from following a demo rather than reading instructions - then you can view this recording on Sewing Quarter's YouTube channel

I have also been working on this month's Free Pattern to send out to my Newsletter subscribers, a little late again, but I really do plan to get on top of these this year and not leave them til the last minute, honest! This month I fancied some hand sewing, but instead of EPP, I have returned to the first patchwork technique I learnt, American hand piecing, which involves sewing a tiny running stitch along a drawn line. I had forgotten how much I love this method and plan to do more of it! This wall hanging (or table runner, it's up to you) was inspired by my love of Orla Kiely's graphics, and is a kinda homage to her Stem design. Subscribe to the Newsletter now to receive your own free copy straight to your inbox.

My Latest Free Pattern & Christmas Wishes

For December's free pattern to my Newsletter Subscribers I have returned to my favourite EPP to make these adorable Star Pincushions. I made one for myself years ago which you may have seen on my video tutorials. This is also when I first discovered crushed walnut shells, not only does using this as stuffing give them added weight, but the shells are also a great abrasive so they keep your pins nice and sharp.

So we're coming to the end of yet another year... I have no idea where this one has gone, yet a lot seems to have happened, my TV appearances on Sewing Quarter for one. As you may have seen on social media posts and the TV Channel, Sewing Quarter is sadly closing at the end of the year. It was been a wonderful opportunity to work on such an inspiring project with a team of amazing people, and I'm sure this will be the start of many creative ventures and collaborations to come, so watch this space - you can also follow my fellow guest designers' latest news on the new Facebook group SQ Designers Chat 

This year has also seen many new pattern and kit releases, my Curved Motion Medallion BOM is still going strong - you can join this at any time by the way - not to mention the house and business move - and through it all I am still loving what I do. 

I still wake up with amazing plans for each day, and can't wait to get up and get on with making. I know I am very lucky, but I also know this takes damn hard work as well as the love and support from my loved ones and my wonderful customers. My latest free pattern - Strippy Circles Table Runner

Well, I think we're finally settled into our new home and my new workshop. There are obviously things we'd like to do to the house, but nothing's urgent, although the boiler does make some very loud bangs now and again! We've also had fun with some very cute mice who decided to bed down in a house plant my in-laws were looking after during the move, they got the shock of their lives when they were moved into our kitchen and given a good water - the mice that is, not the in-laws... Thankfully we've moved them into the warmth and safety of the garage now.

After a mad month, I am now back on track with my free Newsletter patterns - if you are new to Sewmotion, I send out a free pattern every month to my subscribers, generally based on the use of fabric pre-cuts, but to be honest, it is anything that inspires me at the time! This month, I have returned to the jelly roll strip to make up this very easy and fast table runner project, in which I have used strips from my Royal Blue strip set, an Edyta Sitar favourite.

I have also being frantic trying to get my projects done for my next shows on Sewing Quarter, this Monday (7th Oct), which include this improv-ish Strong Ties quilt. Playing on my Sewing Machine

Well, a week back and our holiday in glorious Kefalonia already seems like months ago! We had a very relaxing time, if a little too hot at times, still the town of Skala was as beautiful as ever, and one day we may even retire there... 

Meanwhile, back to reality - the next few months look crazy! With Harrogate Quilt show next week, then hopefully a house move, Duxford Autumn Quilt show at the end of October, my first Knitting & Stitching show in Harrogate in November, not to mention a few Sewing Quarter shows slotted in, I think I'll be sleeping through Christmas :)

It is good to be back in the swing of things though, I definitely needed a break after Festival of Quilts, and now I'm full of ideas again, the first of which is my monthly free pattern to my Newsletter subscribers, I know it's a little late, but better late than never right? For this month, I have gone back to an old favourite that I used to make as finished gifts back when I used to sell at craft fairs - the Patchwork Glasses Case. 

This is a great little project with some simple machine sewing, but the best thing is I get to play with some of the bazillion stitches on my sewing machine that I just never get the time to explore. As you can see, I needed to add an embroidered accent down both sides of the case, so I had a little play to find the appropriate stitch, noting down the stitch number and size as I went, so when I came to make a decision I knew what to program into the machine. I also found that unplugging my foot and using the start/stop button when sewing the embroidery stitches made it so much happier tension-wise.

Wonky Hexies Free Pattern

Did you know my Newsletter subscribers receive a free PDF pattern every month? So far this year, we have been enjoying my block-of-the-month Mystery quilt which came to an end in June. So we are now returning to my beloved pre-cuts and stash-busting patterns, starting with a variation on a theme... 

My Wonky Squares Wall Hanging pattern proved very popular, especially when I made it on Sewing Quarter, so I started to wonder which other shapes would work - and of course, I had to have a go with the good ol' hexy! I also returned to my partially-seamed hexies, a tutorial for which can be seen here. Add in the freezer paper technique used for the wonky blocks, and hey presto, I have a new pattern.

Now, I have to admit, I think there is a little too much white/negative space in the wall hanging for me - you may love the space to create beautiful free motion quilting designs, or maybe embroidered motifs. If it's not for you, then you can simply decrease the size of the sashings and borders as below, just taking an 1" off the width of the strips makes such a difference.

As the wonky blocks finish at a 9" square, there are so many possible layouts - I have had a play with a few below... 

In this one I have bordered the 9" blocks with blue strips to add a little more interest, then added white sashings and borders.

Who says the wall hanging has to be square, or this would make a gorgeous table runner. Add light blue sashings and inner border and then a wider white border.

Finally, my favourite, which I think I will just have to make into a quilt when I get a minute! I have added the layout below so you can see the white strips that offset the blocks to create this circle. 

You can obviously also play around with the colours - what about using all black and whites for a monotone quilt? Maybe different tones of the same colour? Friendship Star Wall Hanging

Gosh, what another busy week! I had a good time at last weekend's quilt show at the Imperial War Museum in Duxford, always a fascinating venue, if a little cold to the bones... someone said the aircraft in the other half of the hangar has to be kept at a certain temperate.. they're not kidding! 

Anyway, it was lovely to meet existing as well as new subscribers to my Newsletter, all of which have just received this month's free Pre-cut Party pattern... my Friendship Star Wall Hanging.

I recently rediscovered this lovely block which is made using a pretty clever piecing technique that uses very little fabric and is really quick. This month's free pattern and gorgeous new pre-cuts

We've had a little taster of autumn up here in the Northeast this last week, but the sun's shining again, so all's good. This time of year always reminds me of new beginnings and learning new things. What about you? Do you feel the urge to learn something new? A new technique maybe?? For my latest free Pre-cut Party pattern to my Newsletter subscribers, I have returned to my favourite curved English paper-piecing technique to make up these beautiful festive table mats. I've had the idea of an EPP wreath running around my head for a while now, and when I showed this variation on IG, a friend suggested they would be great as table mats, so here we are!

The wreath is hand pieced and then appliquéd onto the background, a feature panel for your cutlery and borders are then added to complete these beautiful mats, which would go nicely with my Table Runner kit featured last month. It's Pre-Cut Party time... again!

Where on earth is this year going!?! I seem to say this every month, but how did it become August already?? Anyway, a new month means a new Pre-Cut Party pattern. For those new to Sewmotion, I offer a free pattern to my Newsletter subscribers every month, based on my love of the quilting pre-cut, be it jelly roll strips, charm squares, a layer cake, or even scraps from the stash.

This month I have taken inspiration from one of the many strip sets I've been making up for next week's Festival of Quilts - my Rainbow stripper made up of Makower's Spectrum solids. They are so bright and cheerful and I wanted to show how the most traditional of quilt blocks can look amazingly modern in the right fabrics. So here is my Rail Fence Quilt...

This quilt finishes as approx. 53" x 65" so would make a great lap quilt or a child's bed quilt. It uses just 20 strips and around 2m of background fabric.

July's Free Pattern and some more new projects

As those familiar with Sewmotion will know, I send out a free pattern every month to my Newsletter subscribers, many of which are based on my love of the fabric pre-cut, while some are designed to bust the stash, including all those "it might be useful one day" scraps. And this is where July's pattern comes in - the EPP Flower Mug Rug!

I may have mentioned before how curved English paper-piecing has taken over my life, everything from my Purse and Hoop Art kits to my mammoth Curve Motion Medallion BOM - though I think I prefer the smaller projects, and they're also a great way to introduce people to this wonderful technique. 

I've also made up three versions of this Mug Rug kit, all from Liberty of London's Cottage Garden prints, there's the Pastel, the Blue and the Pink kits, all of which include the fabric pieces, wadding, pre-cut paper templates (Yay!) and full instructions, you'll just need a Sewline Glue Pen and thread. Through all this, I'm still in my mad rush towards the Festival of Quilts, how did it become July already! June's free pattern

Life's getting a little frantic here at the minute, the mammoth cut has began in preparation for August's Festival of Quilts. Though I'm telling myself I've still got two months, I know that's going to fly by and I really need to get my finger out! As well as getting fat quarter bundles, jelly rolls and maybe some charm packs cut, I need to figure out how many kits I can get out of my fabric stock, what extras I need and how many I actually need to take to a four-day show, and that's all before I can then let the printers know how many patterns I need! Friends tell me I'll be fine and to make a list... I have lists of lists!! haha!

And of course, it doesn't help when my brain is coming up with new ideas for kits all the time! And then I've also got 'normal' work including commissions for magazines, and of course my free monthly pattern to my Newsletter Subscribers. 

For June I've returned to the jelly roll strip to create this Disappearing Courthouse Steps quilt - I love building blocks only to cut them up and rearrange them don't you! I have made this quilt using the Heart & Soul fabrics from Riley Blake, and once it's quilted and bound, I plan to release it as a kit. This week one of the many projects on the go has been a new Hoop Art kit using the cute Kitty fabrics, I particularly love the flower print in this collection - so many fussy cutting possibilities!

And talking of magazine work, I've also got to make a couple of cushions in this gorgeous Dashwood Studio fabrics, so cute!!!

Part 2 of my Curved EPP Tutorial - the Piecing - & an Easter Sale

Well, it's the Thursday before the Easter weekend and the sun is shining... fingers crossed it will continue to do so, I really fancy getting out into the countryside this weekend. That said, this is England, and no doubt the rain will appear at some point, which means another weekend of staying indoors with some sewing on the go... shame... ;)

I am working on so many EPP projects at the moment, including a long list of magazine commissions which I can't show off quite yet. However, I can share the second instalment of my series of YouTube videos on curved English paper-piecing and how to make this beautiful cushion.

My Curved EPP Movie Tutorials

I've been planning to make some how-to videos for a while now, but just haven't had the time to sit and learn something new. But with my obsession with curved EPP threatening to take over my life, I thought it was about time I showed the world what all the fuss was about, so I sat down and learnt how to use iMovie and made my first series of short tutorials. And what better place to start than with this gorgeous fussy-cut EPP Flower Cushion.

There will be four tutorials in all, the first one below starts with fussy-cutting each of these simple shapes, and then glue-basting them using a Sewline glue pen. I know there are traditionalists out there who prefer to thread baste, but you really can't get nice smooth curves around your shapes without using glue, and believe me, once you have pieced your shapes and removed the papers, you would never know glue was ever there!

January always seems like such a long month, and this year was no exception. This pretty EPP Flower Hoop Art project lends itself so well to fussy-cutting - a technique where you cut identical motifs from your fabric which then create a secondary design when the shapes are sewn together.
